Proven Ways to Develop A Positive Mindset: Tips To Start 2023 Strong

Updated: Feb 15, 2023

What can you do this year to make your life better than last year?

The first quarter of the year is the perfect time for do-overs, resolutions, and lifestyle changes. It’s often when we reflect on the previous year and set expectations for this new year.

And so, the answer to the question above is to start developing a more positive mindset. The key to having a happier, healthier, and more productive year is to take control of your attitude and your mindset toward life.

While it is true that developing a positive mindset is never an easy task (and, sometimes, it can be a long and tedious process), there are a few manageable things that you can do to start.

Here are some tips to help you start 2023 right with a positive mindset.

3 Tips to Develop a Positive Mindset

1. Set meaningful and realistic goals

Starting a new year gives us 365 new chances to improve our lives and achieve our goals. So take time to reflect on what you want 2023 to look like for you. What kind of life are you trying to build? What things do you want to do? What goals do you want to work on?

By answering these questions, you can gain a better understanding of what matters the most to you and what kind of impact you want to make on your life this year. Only then will you be able to strategically think about your vision and your action plan for this year.

Remember, setting goals isn’t just about listing down all your dreams and aspirations. Dream big but still be realistic when it comes to goal setting. Never set your expectations too high that you can’t possibly achieve them in time and you only end up disappointed in yourself. Be realistic. This is how you shift your mindset to a more positive one, all while making big changes in your life.

2. Be mindful of the present

Realistically speaking, it can be difficult to live in the present when we’re weighed down by our past traumas or when we’re paralyzed by so many uncertainties about our future. Lingering on those big “what if” questions will never do you any good. This hinders your ability to have a positive mindset and live life to the fullest.

“Living life to the fullest” doesn’t mean just checking multiple items off of your bucket list. It doesn’t mean being reckless with your decisions either.

It means taking the time to savor every moment, no matter how mundane they may be. It means reflecting on what you’re grateful for and spending time with people you love, instead of wasting time letting negative thoughts intrude.

There are a lot of things in life that you will never be able to control. You should, instead, learn how to let go and allow these situations to run their course. The only things that you can control in life are how you react and what you do next.

3. Have a healthy emotional outlet

Having a positive mindset does not mean that you irrationally push aside every negative thoughts or feelings that you get. Life doesn’t work like that. Truth is, too much optimism is impractical.

To develop a positive mindset, you should learn how to process your negative thoughts better and healthier. This typically consists of doing something to release all your pent-up thoughts and frustrations. A few examples include journaling, painting, taking a walk, talking to someone you trust, and even just taking time to sit with your thoughts.

Never bottle up or hold onto negativity, as this may get dangerous and lead to depression, isolation, or self-harm. It is important that you have a healthy emotional outlet where we can channel all our negative energy. Fill your year doing things that you enjoy doing. This way, you can make 2023 both positive and memorable for yourself.

Takeaway

2023 is a blank slate filled with 365 days of new opportunities for growth.

By developing a positive mindset, you are able to learn new skills on how to deal with life healthily, confidently, and appreciatively. And you may also learn how to build yourself a life worth living.
